The mono cutlery of the 21st century

Mono V is the first completely new cutlery concept from our manufactory in over 20 years. At the beginning of 2020, we contacted the Berlin designer Mark Braun with this ambitious project. The idea: a new Mono cutlery - resource-saving use of materials, easy to manufacture, highest quality standards, timeless aesthetics and made in the Mono manufactory in Mettmann. 2.5 years later, Mono V has come to stay.

Hardly any dish promotes table fellowship more than a fondue

Forks and conversations cross at the centre of the table. Threads of cheese are pulled, fillets are cooked, stories are told and written. This spectacle already fascinated Herbert Seibel (founder of the Mono brand) in the 1960s when he developed the first Mono Fondue Sets. Two generations and 50 years later, Mono continues this tradition - in form and enjoyment.

About mono - fifth generation family business

The history of mono began long before 1959. You have to go back 125 years.

In 1895, Wilhelm Seibel I laid the foundation stone for the family business by founding the Britaniawarenfabrik W. Seibel in Mettmann in North Rhine-Westphalia. Expansion followed in 1911 with a branch factory in Ziegenhain in Hesse, which later became the property of his two younger sons Heinrich and Alfred Seibel.

Due to the good order situation in the post-war years, the workforce of the two factories in Mettmann and Ziegenhain grew to almost 1000 employees. But in the 1950s, the company began to feel the effects of competition, especially from Japan and Spain. Sales figures dropped, employees had to be laid off, and the Mettmann factory merged before it was dissolved.

In Ziegenhain, Herbert Seibel (Heinrich Seibel's eldest son) tried to counteract this and commissioned Peter Raacke to develop a new cutlery. Mono A came onto the market, established the Mono brand and, through a strategic focus on quality and design, ensured the survival of the family business as a manufactory.

In 1985, Herbert Seibel retired at the age of 75 and his nephew Wilhelm Seibel IV, a great-grandson of the founding father, took over the business. At the end of the 1980s, he brought the cutlery production back to Mettmann.
Mono believes that good, innovative, surprising and successful things happen when the right ingredients come together. Mono products are always created in collaboration with freelance designers or design studios. Quite a few designers have enriched the Mono portfolio with several products or entire product families. Mono has commissioned some designers or specifically sought contact with them, while others have approached them with concrete concepts. Product development is always an exciting process that aims to bring together all perspectives, from aesthetics to function and production, in a perfect symbiosis. Mono sees itself as a platform for contemporary creatives who share our design DNA.
Today, Wilhelm Seibel V is the fifth generation to run the family business with around 30 employees, two of whom are his sons.
